RYA Radar

RYA Radar training courses are an essential RYA course for anyone carrying a radar set on their vessel. The RYA  Radar training course will introduce you to the shortcomings of your radar set as well as it’s clear advantages. This training course will teach you to use radar for navigation and collision avoidance after showing you how to correctly tune a radar set.

RYA approved radar simulators are used to promote the realism of the training. Using the radar simulator we can generate scenarios that develop in realtime to enable you to practice your new skills of Radar plotting and CPA calculations with our specialist RYA radar instructor on hand to assist you while you master your radar skills.

The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea commonly known as the COLREGS states:

COLREG Rule 5 requires that;
“every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision”.

What this effectively means is that if you have radar available then you should be using it. This is especially the case in situations where visibility may be restricted. Having a good understanding of how to use radar for navigation and collision avoidance as well as a strong understanding generally of electronic navigation aids is critical to safe and enjoyable time on the water.

Understanding how a radar set functions also adds to your overall safety and wellbeing on the water, as well as that of others around you.
