Founded in 2022 but with a team having over 25 years of marine teaching experience, Marine Power Training delivers the RYA Powerboat syllabus, from Powerboat Level 1 right up to Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence, required to gain Commercial Endorsement of your Powerboat Advanced training and operate vessels up to 24m in length on a commercial basis. Marine Power Training also has a wide range of shore-based courses to help you in your Powerboat Training journey, including RYA VHF, RADAR, DaySkipper and Yachtmaster Theory / Coastal Skipper. Based at the mouth of the Hamble River we are only a few minutes onto the expansive Southampton Water which provides a great venue to learn and develop your Powerboat skills in.

Meet The Team
Philip Taysom
Philip’s earliest memories on the water were learning to sail at Felpham in the 1970’s (yes, he really is that old!). Many years spent on big sailing boats (Contessa 32 being his love), Philip discovered the joys of Powerboats relatively late but soon became hooked, acting as Safety Boat Skipper for National and International sailing events locally on the Solent. As a Professional Skipper, often working alongside ‘Fids’ on Wetwheels Hamble, or Camera Boat Skipper for the glamour of the Sail GP, Philip is an RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor as well as a VHF Instructor Assessor / examiner. Sharing ‘Fid’s’ focus on safety in a Powerboat environment, in his role as Principal, Philip builds Marine Power Training’s systems and procedures, constantly working to deliver outstanding training in a first class learning environment.
Ian Fiddaman (Fids)
Some say Ian (or “Fids” as his friends call him) was born on the water! What we do know is that from the age of 18 he was a founder member of the A34 Sailing Club (if you know, you know!). Rising to Chief Instructor Power of the renowned Hayling Island Sailing Club, Ian has had an amazing career on the water including 10 years Senior Helm in the RNLI, 15 years in HM Coastguard service as well as acting as the Head of Safety around the World for the Extreme Sailing Series where he provided support for skippers such as Dame Ellen MacArthur and many, many others. With a strong focus on safety and First Aid, Ian served for 10 years as a Community First Responder, in addition to being an RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor he is an approved MCA and RYA First Aid trainer. Just don’t ask him about his favourite curry! When ‘Fids’ isn’t teaching at Marine Power Training, you’re most likely to find him in his ‘other’ role as Chief Skipper for the Wetwheels Hamble boat.
Richard Hawes
If it’s mechanical, runs on any kind of fuel and floats on the water then Richard Hawes is in his element! With over 30 years on the water on a huge range of powerboats (including owning a VERY cool Camel Trophy Rib – and getting married to the lovely Tracy in a matching pair of Camel Trophy Landrovers!). Richard brings decades of experience in the health care sector to his teaching. Combined with his amazing technical experience, Richard brings a unique range of skills in instructing within the RYA framework
Andy Pedrick
Logan
Our gorgeous training boat, Logan is a Ribeye A600 Custom. Ribeye produce some of the very best RIB’s on the market from their base in Dartmouth, Devon, UK. With high quality Hypalon tubes, a superb Yamaha F115BETL outboard and recently fitted Garmin 9” chart plotter, she is a great boat to learn in providing a stable ride with smooth power delivery. Coded for commercial work within the Solent Waters, she has a full complement of safety. Logan is a wonderful boat to learn on. Logan is fully RYA TG43-22 compliant as a learning vessel.

Black Knight
Marine Power Training are very proud to operate Black Knight for training on RYA courses at the highest level. Black Knight is another British RIB with amazing ancestry. XS Ribs produce boats for demanding conditions and are used in many law enforcement, training and patrol applications. Black Knight, an XS Ribs 850 – 8.5m of stunning RIB with oversized tubes to provide superb balance in the roughest of conditions, you sit ‘in’ Black Knight, protected from the worst of the Solent weather. Unique in an RYA training environment, Black Knight has twin Yamaha F150GETX engines with fly-by-wire control for superb response. Kitted out with the latest Furuno TZT13XL multi-function display, Black Knight is integrated into the Furuno / Time Zero system in the training room; routes created as part of your passage planning automatically appear on the boat, ready to use in your training. A state-of-the-art Furuno NXT RADAR provides amazing target identification on night operations. An amazing boat to develop your powerboat skills on, Black Knight features in our RYA Intermediate and Advanced training courses.
